At 80 my dad oftenly seats me down and explain how the Gasa(pokomo council of elders) used to solve clan conflicts, land disputes, how they brought unity and preached for the adherence and total submission to culture. He explains how chastity, shy, intelligence and behavior was fundamental pre-requisites for a qualification to marriage, how prioritised was respect to elders. He describes the cultural procedure that boys turn men and girls turn women-How to live with a spouse. He touches on the cultural way to hold social functions like weddings, divorce and burials, the virtues and the quality of leadership they possesed and I feel worried!!!
But why am I worried? My worry is where are those children games and entertainment(kibe)? Where are the story telling sessions at night's? Where are those cultural foods they used to eat? ............. Oh! Our culture has perished, our culture has vanished, it has diminished...., and now our culture is the westerns' culture , the culture which lost the God that was believed to live near us and now believe of a God in heaven, which ripped off our hides and skins and brought us expensive shirts and trousers, which killed the morals of young people, which has made us oftenly feel fake when we embrace our culture. Aren't you worried about it? You must be worried!.
Moral decay resulting from ignorance of culture has lead to constant divorces, shaby dressing modes, prostitution and many more. Right now virginity is not a factor to consider while marrying thus girls indulge in sex before marriage any howly, we see people ignoring those who embrace the culture, we see girls flooding the social media and posting pictures of their booty accompaning it is a text "me, myself and I". These are girls that are not shy, who lack intelligence and with very poor behaviours. We see relatives rush to courts to solve disputes between them. Even weddings are done as per how the western do it. Is this how our ancestors were?
Where are we going Africans? Why are we lost like this? If Mekatilili wa Menza and Waiyaki wa Wahinga could rise up and see the current situation they will just collapse due to shock and surprise. The legacy left by our ancestors should be respected and adhered to because it's the only way out ,it's the only thing to carry us out of this crisis and it is Culture. Alas! I hear some young people do not even know their mother tongue.
Culture is the source of unity, love and prosperity. Culture is the cure for hatred. Take a look at Tana River County youths who do not even talk their mother tongue in groups even when they all belong to a common language group. They say it is "digital" to speak foreign languages. They oftenly feel ashamed to speak their language. Some even deny being pokomos leave alone coming from Tana River. We should think and rethink about getting back to our cultures no matter how bad they might be but it's the easiest way to make us live a happy life.
Let us change, let peace prevail and let Tana River County prosper~Abubakar Godhana.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING AFTER FORM FOUR?
Completing 8-4 of the 8-4-4 system of education is vital and very important though not adequately a fundamental aspect in the pursue of one's goals. Statistics prove 75% of the youths in Tana River have completed the exhaustive and tiresome course. But the question is, are we eating the fruits of the investments we did? Or we are equivalent to our grandy that did not step in a classroom? Have we achieved our goals greatly expected? Or do we discourage young potential learners who do not see the importance of education from our way of living?
Let us be sincere, what have you done that is educationally insinuated since your graduation from High school? What do u see in you that is positive achieved from the course? Has the course brought any advantage or has it caused more misery to you?
Well, it should have helped us great only most of us don't realize it or aren't striving to achieve it. Take a look at the photo below for instance....
Some of these people are graduates from secondary schools but they couldn't see a better thing to do than taking care of somebody's motorbike periodically shifting from one rude owner to a more harsh motorbike possessor. When I move to the east I see energetic gentlemen and young ladies with great future changing sex partners in a days' interval I see young girls being mothers and some wives of "husbands". I stride to the west and witness High school graduates flooding police recruitment grounds like its the only job in earth these are the people who spend each single penny on khat(miraa) and other drugs. At the North, graduates sitting idle on idle-based coners termed "maskani" discussing nothing but Arsenal's superiority to Chelsea or Amina 's killing beauty plus fantasizing winning the weekends Mega-jackpots. To the south are graduates aspiring-to-be winners by betting with a borrowed fifty Bob. Leave alone those who travel to "abroad" looking for petty "skill-less" jobs at Garissa AKA Arab ndogo, Lamu and Malindi, those mobilised by hungry politicians to cause havoc forgeting they are graduates and those who floods ngoma and disco vumbi venues. Are we high school graduates really? Is this how we should live after years of torture and sacrifice? The answer is a big NO! I
it's NO.
Honestly, we are sitting on our potentials and abilities. There is this adage that says "nothing good comes on a silver platt
er". It's our duty to know our obligations and roles and work towards achieving them and inturn realize our goals. Let us not expect favours from nothing. The 8-4 should make a difference between us and the illiterate or those not at our level of education. There are so many things we can do to make a difference it all depends on your zeal and vehemence to making a difference. We can go for further studies for instance, start a business from our entreprenueral skills, chipping into small but good paying jobs like working for NGO's IEBC BOG teachers etc, blogging, start a youth group, you can even start a security company out from nothing and many others. I will cover this on my next article -How Tanarian youth can improve Tana's economy however. Let us not depend on other creatures or humanbeings for our well-being but as one fundamental factor in helping us realize our goals. Dependency on humanbeings for personal well-being will close our thinking ability stagnating our individual achievements and oftenly leading to misery at termination of the dependency.
Dear brothers and sisters. There is no shortcut here but your efforts. No Hiroshima Nagasaki excuses but the readiness to face the bitter truth. How many times did Abraham Lincoln fail before being US president anyway?... I remember when I received my letter to join the university for a bachelor of science in economics and statistics I had no single penny same to my parent's I searched for assistance all over to no avail, that's when I realized Iam the assistance. I raised funds on my own procedures some of which I have stated above and now see I thank God am year 2.2 and completed my CPA section 4 that is out from nothing. You don't have to be rich to study neither to start businesses or companies but efforts and determination are paramount. It all starts with you...

TANA NEEDS YOUR TALENT TO DEVELOP
God gave us talents to benefit us..... Why do we have talents if we can't pay our rent? Why get talents if we can't pay our own fees? Why have talents if we can't put food on the table? These are questions we should be asking ourselves each time we go viral complaining about the unfavourable nature of our lives!!!
It's through talent Victor Wanyama pays for all expenses encountered by his family, it's through talent Anyang ' Nyongo' s Lupita Nyong'o grew to a millionaire, it's through talent Lionel Messi is one of the richest people in Argentina, it's through talent our one and only Diamond Platnumz who is said to have not stepped into a class posses that Bugatti. What can this tell you? I tells you talent can take you out from nothing to something right? But the one billion question is.... Do we want to explore our talents? Do we want to get income from our talents? Or rather do we want to impress the general public from our talents? The answer in most cases is no!!! Very few have got the feeling and audacity to try it out.........
Two months ago. I was sharing with my friend and he said that he oftenly plays a very good football making everybody applause each time he posses the ball. Then I told him what has he done with that talent to atleast put anything on the table for his family. He replied "nothing" accompanied by pointing fingers on the failure on the government to realize the potential of the youths!!! Personally I differed with him here!! Do you? Everything starts with you and your determination...... WCB couldn't exist were it not for self start. Start with anything you have!!!! If you can sing start with that pen and book you have! Before people realize your potential and help you out! Before the government sees the benefits of in investing in your talent.
We need a good gospel minister to bless people with amazing songs, we need investigative journalists to help solve and expose the wicked in the society. We need good photographers to help us keep amazing memories for the future. We need Emcees to keep us entertained in events. The list is endless.
What is it that you do? What really is your talent? If you are a dancer, there are people who make a living through dancing. Athletes make a living by using their talent. Who said that you a different? Believe in what you do. A certain instrumentalist said that if he doesn’t enjoy how he plays the guitar, the audience will also not enjoy. We need to wake up! Its time we stand up. Don’t expect people to always help you find yourself. In fact some people are glad that you don’t know yourself.
If you are an aspiring entrepreneur, don’t wait for people to give you business ideas, have them, if you are a singer, don’t wait for someone to drag you to practice singing, do it. Enjoy it! If an aspiring journalist, don’t wait for people give you the latest news, let them inquire the news from you. It’s not a matter of being spoon fed, it’s a matter of getting your own meal. Commitment is paramount! You have to be, no short cuts.
Discouragement and disappointment will always be there as part of our growth. Learn from them. What really matters is how we tackle it. Never loose hope. People might not understand or appreciate what you do, but the most important thing is to never doubt yourself. Furthermore, life is difficult for the “blind”. Most of the time, those who seem to major in discouraging you are actually scared and feel threatened by your growth, therefore they try to lower you to their level.
For one to succeed, you also need to have people whom you share the same vision, but in a different perspective, and also people who are ready to be committed. By different perspective I mean, for example, person X and Y have a passion in media studies, but X is more in video editing and videography, while Y is in reporting and anchoring. Get someone that will make you feel challenged in life to do more. By so doing you become better.
